WEEKLY ROUND ROBIN - Show Up & Play on Reserved Courts

Every Tuesday 8:30 a.m. at Bear Hollow except 8/3/08.

Every Thursday 6:30 p.m. at Chambers Park
except July 6, 13 & 20th because of
Fisher Clinic using the courts.

League matches are played at any court of your choice in the local area.

Each player will choose 1 of 3 different USTA skill levels upon registration to be placed in a division of those with similar skills.

You will be emailed a schedule of matches to be completed. Both players are responsible for making email or phone contact to choose the time, day and place to play. You may play matches at any speed or order just so they are completed by the deadline. Playing one match a week will ensure completing games on time.

Players who have won all their matches at the end of the season advance to the next level with a prize/award. You must play all matches to be eligible for a prize. Defaulted matches do not count as a win toward a playoff, should there be one scheduled.

The league fee is FREE for 2008!

MAWTL RULES AND PROCEDURES

Especially at recreational skill levels of play, it's important to know not only the rules of tennis, but also those covering basic etiquette. Following are some basic rules that cover common courtesy for tennis matches.

1. Schedule your game and be prompt. Each person/team must bring a new can of unopened balls.

2. Warm up for 5 minutes. Warm up is not practice; it means hitting balls directly to the opponent and at a reasonable pace. Doubles teams may warm up with each other, rather than their opponents.

3. Play an 8 game set & win by 2. Winner will immediately email score to lggallier@comcast.net

4. Server announces the score before each point. This not only ensures that players are on the same wavelength before each point and avoids later disputes, calling the score before serving lets the receiver know the point is about to begin. If the receiver is not ready at the score announcement hold up a hand and say, "I'm not ready." If the receiver makes a stab at a serve and then claims she wasn't ready, the receiver is out of luck.

5. Make line calls promptly, loud and clear. Never question a call.

6. When in doubt, call it "IN." If there is any doubt, give your opponent the benefit of the doubt. If you honestly can't see a call, you may ask your opponent if they saw the ball. If they saw the ball, they should make the call. If they didn't see the ball, you must give them the point.

There are no "do overs," with one exception. If doubles teammates disagree on a serve call, and the serve was put back in play, they may play a let. If the receiver put a sitting duck back in play, sportsmanship would require that the receiving team give the point to their opponents.

7. If you're not sure - play it; it's in. If an opponent returns a ball and calls it out after her return went out of bounds, eliminate this person from your play list. Do not argure the point.

8. Balls landing on any part of the line are considered IN.

9. Balls may be hit in the air or after one bounce except on the return of serve, which can only be hit after one bounce.

10. Don't walk across the back of another court until the players have finished the point.

11. If your ball goes to an adjacent court, wait until the players on that court have finished the point before you ask for the ball. If a ball comes onto your court, return it as soon as play has stopped on both courts.

12. A "let" may be called by any player when a ball rolls onto your court from another court and causes an interruption of play.

13. If a ball is caught or hits any part of a player or racquet before it bounces, it is assumed to have been good, even if the catcher is out of bounds or the ball was clearly headed out of bounds. The ball is not out until it lands out.

14. Retrieve balls for the server so that she always has more than one ball for serving the point. Eliminate wasted time retrieving balls by picking up any balls closest to you when your opponent retrieves a ball.

15. If a player or a player's racquet touches the net when the ball is in play, the point is lost.

16. Always shake hands with your opponent after a match.
